Job Description

Civil CAD Drafter / Technician

We are seeking an experienced Civil CAD Drafter/Technician with a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience supporting civil engineering, land development, and infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will have strong proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and the ability to efficiently produce accurate, detailed, construction-ready drawings while working closely with engineers, project managers, surveyors, and other members of the design team.

This position will support a wide variety of residential, commercial, municipal, industrial, and infrastructure projects throughout Midland, West Texas, and other Texas markets.

Responsibilities:

The Civil CAD Drafter/Technician will assist engineers and project managers with the preparation, development, and coordination of civil construction plans and supporting technical documents.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and modify civil construction drawings, site development plans, grading plans, paving plans, utility plans, drainage plans, erosion control plans, demolition plans, and infrastructure improvement plans.
  • Develop construction plan sets from preliminary concepts through final construction documents.
  • Prepare plan and profile sheets for roadways, water lines, sanitary sewer systems, storm drainage systems, and other civil infrastructure.
  • Create and maintain Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, profiles, feature lines, corridors, pipe networks, and related design objects.
  • Import and process survey information, including survey points, surface data, LandXML files, and existing-condition linework.
  • Coordinate survey base files with proposed engineering design drawings.
  • Assist with grading design, earthwork coordination, drainage layouts, utility routing, roadway geometry, and site development layouts.
  • Prepare permitting exhibits, construction details, quantity exhibits, easement exhibits, and other supporting project documents.
  • Incorporate engineering calculations, design revisions, municipal review comments, client comments, and field information into construction documents.
  • Maintain organized and efficient Civil 3D drawing files, external references, data shortcuts, sheet sets, and project folder structures.
  • Assist engineers with identifying potential utility conflicts, grading issues, drainage conflicts, constructability concerns, and plan coordination issues.
  • Perform internal QA/QC reviews to verify drawing accuracy, consistency, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, surveyors, designers, and field personnel to resolve drafting and design-related issues.
  • Manage multiple assignments and project deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and production quality.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional CAD drafting/design experience in civil engineering, land development, or a closely related field.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing civil engineering construction plan sets.
  • Experience with grading, paving, drainage, water, sanitary sewer, and site development plans.
  • Working knowledge of Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, profiles, pipe networks, points, and data management.
  • Ability to interpret engineering plans, survey information, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Ability to take an engineering concept or redline and develop it into a complete, professional construction drawing.
  • Strong understanding of drafting standards, drawing organization, scales, sheet layouts, labeling, and construction plan presentation.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify potential inconsistencies or conflicts within construction documents.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with engineers, project managers, surveyors, and other technical staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting established deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical school degree, associate degree, or coursework in Civil Engineering Technology, CAD/Drafting, Surveying, or a related field.
  • Experience with residential subdivision and commercial land development projects.
  • Experience preparing roadway, water, wastewater, storm drainage, and site development construction documents.
  • Familiarity with municipal development standards and permitting processes in Texas and West Texas communities.
  • Experience with Civil 3D data shortcuts, corridors, assemblies, grading tools, quantity calculations, and pipe networks.
  • Experience coordinating CAD files between civil engineering, surveying, architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines.
  • Familiarity with construction practices and the ability to recognize potential constructability issues during plan preparation.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is more than a production drafter. We are looking for someone who understands how civil construction plans come together and can anticipate what engineers, contractors, municipalities, and clients will need from a plan set.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, dependable, organized, and detail-oriented, with the ability to take ownership of drafting assignments and move projects forward with limited supervision. They should be comfortable asking questions when necessary, identifying potential problems before they become larger issues, and contributing ideas that improve the quality and efficiency of our engineering deliverables.

This position is well suited for an experienced Civil 3D professional who wants to be an important part of a growing engineering company and have meaningful involvement in projects from initial survey and conceptual design through permitting and final construction.
