Job Summary

The Senior Indirect Tax Accountant is responsible for supporting the department’s indirect tax functions. These responsibilities include indirect tax compliance; supporting the Tax Manager in all tax audits; researching tax applications and customer billing disputes related to construction activities; and assisting with state income tax matters. This position is non-exempt and reports directly to the Tax Manager.

Core Job Duties

Own the business personal property tax function, by maintaining the current location list, processing bill payments, resolving notices, supporting audits, and working with a third-party filing preparer.

• Resolve and research billing issues with internal departments.
• Analyze and identify sales and use tax exposures and present solutions to minimize assessments.
• Gather data and documentation requested for all indirect tax audits, as directed by the Tax Manager, and work with internal departments to ensure audit deadlines are met.
• Maintain the accuracy of the Avalara software, with a focus on researching and applying tax codes and assisting with testing.
• Assist the Tax Manager with state income tax notices and the preparation of payments and vouchers.
• Ensure compliance with state sales and use tax laws and minimize assessments from sales and use tax audits, including analyzing and presenting findings.
• Collaborate on the due diligence and integration of newly acquired businesses, as needed.
• Assist the Finance team with fixed asset maintenance and operating leases.
• Complete special projects as assigned by the Tax Manager.

Qualifications and Required Experience

• Indirect tax experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting firm, or consulting environment.
• Experience with multi-state sales and use tax compliance is required.
• Experience with indirect tax technologies and automation platforms, such as Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, Thomson Reuters, CertifyTax, or similar solutions, is preferred.
• Experience supporting ERP implementations, indirect tax engine integrations, and process automation initiatives.
• Experience with VAT/GST compliance and international indirect tax matters is preferred.

Technical Skills

• Strong knowledge of sales and use tax, VAT/GST, and transaction tax regulations.
• Experience with tax automation and compliance systems.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including data analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
• Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Workday, or similar platforms.
• Familiarity with tax research tools and data analytics platforms is preferred.

Supervisory or Managerial Responsibilities

• This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

The work is performed in various locations, including warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, refineries and hospital settings. Employees may work with co-workers’ side-by-side with a moderate level of activity being performed. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.

The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
